Day at Adventure Aquarium

Day at Adventure Aquarium
Camden, NJ

A visit for the Bugeys to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden with Megan Darling and her 3 girls. Megan was kind enough to take her mini-van so we could all be in one car.  An adventure indeed it sure was.

Bear Brook Trail Marathon

Bear Brook Trail Marathon
Bear Brook State Park, NH

I realized a few months ago that I need to start getting on the ball with these marathons, if I want to do all 50 states.  I figured over the next few years, there should be no excuse not to knock out the 6 New England states.  I searched for a summer marathon in New England that took place on a Saturday, and I found a trail one in New Hampshire for the middle of July.  Perfect.

So my goal was to leave around noon on Friday, drive up to New Hampshire, do the race on Saturday, and drive back home immediately afterwards.  It would make for a tough 36 hours, but I would have all day Sunday to recover.  I ended up not leaving until around 1pm on Friday, and sure enough I caught nasty traffic in Connecticut (right outside of NY City).  That added about 2.5 hours onto my trip, and I ended up not getting to my hotel until 9:50pm.  This was not fun, considering I had to wake up at 5am for the race the next morning.

Alarm goes off at 5am, I am dressed and out the door by 5:15am.  I have about a 30 minute drive to the park.  I get to the park, go through the pre-registration line, and get myself ready for the race.

start/finish

So once I cross the finish line, just a tad under 8 hours, I am handed this as my finisher's prize.  It is a jar of honey.  I thought that was pretty original and was happy to receive it.  It turned out that the race was about 29 miles (so more than 2.5 miles further than a normal marathon).

Finisher's award - a jar of honey

The race ends, and I go to check out the board.  They were giving away prizes (randomly).  Sure enough, it turns out I won a new pair of Salomon trail running shoes.  The retail price of the shoes were actually more than the cost of the race and the cost of the hotel combined.  Sweet!  (and now I have new trail running shoes for the upcoming trail run that I have in late August.

and here are the shoes that came in the mail a week later.

Marathon #8 is in the books, and I wanted to dedicate this to the man that has made this all possible. I don't know how many times I get asked "Brian, how does one run a marathon in 7 hours?" The answer I always give them is that I make sure I have such a high intake of "Herr's Potato Chips" every day. It has helped sculpt the athlete that I am for over 25 years. I have the speed of a turtle, agility of a statue, and overall grace of 4 year old learning to ice skate for the first time. I know most of you think that these skills and talents just come naturally, but that is not true. It takes a lack of preparation and a well balanced diet (potato chips along with Pepsi, pretzels, popcorn...the four basic food groups). Having said that, I just hope people see me as the possibility of what they can become.

I couldn't do any of this without Jim Herr and the company that he started. I now have 5 states done, 45 to go. Its only a tenth of the way into the journey, but none of this would be possible without you. Thanks for everything!
