Brian's Run

My 3rd straight year at the Brian's Run in West Chester.  The weather was great this year.  The warmest it has been in a few years.

I ran into my buddy Brian Nelson.  I hadn't seen Brian in well over 10 years.  We go back a long time, to the days of the West Chester United 76 Arrows (little league soccer).  It was great to see him.  Brian and I went up to see the US Open back in 89 and 90 in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Mr. and Brian Nelson

One of my all time favorite stories:
Brian and I were walking around.  We had a hell of a day so far.  We got to see #1 seed lose in the first round (Stefan Edberg).  To the best of my knowledge (which is very little), that hasn't happened since at a major championship in men's tennis.

So now we are walking around, and we are going to go watch players practice (which you can do at the US Open).  We spot Michael Chang from a far.  He had won the French the previous year.  Brian happened to notice some guy I had never heard of on a court closer.  Apparently, the guy was like the 12th seed or something.  There was nobody watching this guy practice.  Brian suggested we do so, but my comment was "Nah, lets go watch Chang.  This guy has no chance of winning."

Well, sure enough....

Guess who won his first.....of FREAKING FOURTEEN MAJORS....that year:

Pete Sampras

Yeah, my bad on that one Brian!

  1. I just posted a comment in your January post from the Icicle Run... Are you doing it again this year?

How's that hill at the end of Brian's Run? Ugh! I haven't done that race since they changed it from a 10K to a 5-miler. That hill gives me nightmares. lol
